A few words...

In this tutorial I go through the pharmacy practice December 2016 past paper from the Hong Kong Pharmacy Registration Exam. Please note I do not have any affiliations with the Pharmacy and Poisons Board nor did I write the original questions.

Who this tutorial is for:

  • Pharmacists who would are planning to take the Hong Kong registration exams and are struggling with answering clinical past exam questions at home, for example those working in community pharmacy.
  • Pharmacists taking exams in other countries and who would like more practise questions.
  • Pharmacists for continuing education purposes and who would like to improve their clinical knowledge.
  • Advanced or senior pharmacy technicians who would like to improve their clinical knowledge or want some practise questions.

I have tried to keep the answers brief and to the point. Sometimes I provide some background information for continuing education purposes - then mark out what I would consider information the examiner would look for with a bullet point. For some questions it may be possible for there to be a more than one answer which will be acceptable to the examiner.

With the calculations there may be more than one method at arriving at the answer, I try to provide the most straightforward one. I tend to round up to three decimal places or three significant figures. Memorizing basic equations is a requirement for the exam, and I will point them out in the answers provided.

I have provided references used.

I tend to prefer British nomenclature and brand names.

Do bear in mind I have had unlimited time and access to literature resources to help me answer the questions. The exam questions on this paper and on others are difficult, and under exam settings it is likely that only one or two pharmacists, if any, would have been able to answer all the questions in their entirety. A couple of the questions in this particular paper were also regional.

If you would like to comment or challenge any of the answers I have provided please leave a comment in the corresponding comment section or contact me via Facebook on the Hong Kong Registration Exam group.

I would like to thank those who have provided me with support through the group and in helping me finding the answers to some of the questions below. For this paper I had help from Joseph Blais (Q#1d), Morgan Mak (Q#5a) and Dr. Lydia Tang (Q#4b and c).
