b) Tablet containing 500 mg levofloxacin
This is a trick question, even though it is an antibiotic it is not classified as one under the Antibiotics Ordinance presumably because it is synthetically derived.
Drug classification: P1S1S3
Levofloxacin is a third generation fluoroquinolone. It is considered a broad spectrum antibiotic, with extensive activity against Gram-negatives (useful for Pseudomonas) and Atypicals. For Gram-positives it is active against S aureas (but not MRSA), and has additional activity against S pneumoniae, which gives it extended respiratory activity when compared with ciprofloxacin. Similar to other fluoroquinolones even though it is generally well tolerated it sometimes causes the strange severe side effects including skin sensitization and tendon rupture.
Levofloxacin can be given PO and IV.
Fluoroquinolones have a fluoride atom incorporated into their structure.
