a) Syrup BP density
a) Syrup British Pharmacopeia (“B.P.”) is an 85% w/v solution of sucrose in water. It has a density of 1.313 g/mL, How many mL of water should be used to make 150 mL of Syrup B.P.? (3 marks)
85% w/v = 85g sucrose in 100ml syrup
Density of the 85% solution is 1.313 g/ml -> 1.313 *150 = 196.95 g/150ml
Amount of sucrose: 85 g/100ml -> 127.5 g/150 ml
Amount of water: 196.95g - 127.5g = 69.45 g
Density of water is 1 g/ml
69.45 ml of water
